@AgentCeylon_LK I'm not sure and this is just my assumption but I believe it is by invitation.
I'm sure they have a PR/Promotions team who actively look for popular channels to invite into early access.
I'd imagine they want people who generally post positive content. I'm sure there is a degree of luck involved with it as well. I have seen some great content on unknown channels. They just don't have a following yet.

@AgentCeylon_LK Depends on the person, they might be part of other programs with EA or have other outlets beyond youtube. Such as publish for a gaming magazine/website or something along those lines. It's really hard to guess.
Honestly at 1000 subs you're doing better than the vast majority of content creators. If you keep producing original, entertaining content you'll get subs and the channel will grow. Just keep it mostly clean and really aim to entertain a wide audience. When you're trying to entertain a large audience you really want to cast as wide a net as possible.
In 08 or so I had a youtube channel going and got up into the 50k sub range (it was not gaming related). What I noticed is that the sub growth was really slow from 0-10,000 but once I broke 10,000 the sub growth started to take off and when I hit the 50k it really took off.
When you're at the 50k marker people are talking about your channel and sharing it with their friends. You also start to get more thumbs up and that helps you out a ton with the search algorithms on youtube.
