How are the assistants currently working?

We had discussions with my friends today so far assists have worked. There is a description in the new update that they change from 0.75 seconds to 5 seconds. Does this mean that the amount of damage dealt did not matter? Is it enough to hit once just before the last hit of an ally or additionally take e.g. 50% of life to receive assistance?

They say you have to damage an enemy within five seconds of them being knocked. If they get revived, you'll lose the assist.
