Efficiency Medal - Is time used up "deaths" counted in timer?

Hi - I was just wondering how the timer for the "Efficiency Medal" works.  Specifically, does it count total time, including time spent in attempts where you die, or does it only sum the total of all successful (ie, non-dying) checkpoints?

It only counts the total time of all "successful attempt".

So, yes... in some missions it is very useful to die for getting the Efficiency Medal. 

(That will cut off / shortcut the travel time between the checkpoints.)
