Difficulty level change at end of game

At the end of the game I meditate outside the room where the final boss fight occurs, but when I die, I respawn back at the boss fight.  I am not able to change to a lower difficulty in the settings, as it says I can't change while in battle.  When I respawned with other bosses, I would start out at the meditate spot and could change difficulty.  Is there any way around this?  I fear I will not be able to finish the game after putting in so many hours.  Very disappointing.

It's been a few weeks now so I suppose you've probably figured out a solution, but just in case you haven't, I thought I'd check.

Have you tried quitting the game in the middle of the fight?  If so, did it put you in the fight or back at the meditation ring?

Also, without giving spoilers, are you fighting the first or the second part of the final boss?
