Snipedown came out with the best suggestion I've seen for this so far. I did a quick search and didn't find it, so this may be slightly wrong. It consisted of your idea of right stick cursor and left stick to strafe, plus moving the pick up function from square to R2 when looting a death box. The second is important, as you wouldn't have to take your thumb off the stick in order to to pick up items. In the current system, we maybe take that convenience for granted, because overall the death box looting feels really awkward. Without including that second change, looting a box would be really slow.
