I get things out of dumpster, but they don't show up in inventory

I get items from dumpster and they don't show in inventory. The show up when I want to recycle garbage, but not to use in lot. I am frustrated with this. I'm doing the rags to riches challenge and I have some things in my Inventory that I got from the dumpster and I can't use them in my lot.
