Blocked genetics?

Hi..

I have this kinda cartoonish sim style so I changed all my townies to have those ea preset big ears but turns out all of their kids come out with normal ears. This also happens in CAS if you try to 'play with genetics'.

I'm generally just wondering how the genetics work and if those big ears are somehow blocked from genetics?
