I have just extensively tested this and cannot repro. This is my build:
Auto-lighting is enabled. Every time my Sim leaves the room the lights go off and every time they enter they turn on, in both rooms. Auto-lighting does not work when there is a section of wall or ceiling missing.
If you upload your house to the gallery I'd be happy to test it

I always have this problem I really wish ea would fix it

As far a I can tell It was only an issue if the glass roof intersected two rooms. That changed with the latest patch and it occurs in single rooms now.

Thank you for taking the time to look into this.
After repairing the game and starting with a new Sim, I can confirm that the auto-lights with glass roof is working. It still doesn't work when the glass intersects two rooms but I suspect that's a design oversight rather than a bug caused by something else. It seems my game saves had somehow become corrupt.
Thanks again for your time.
