Hey @5qn6d54gtt38 you made initially a bug report and now that we have found out there's no bug, your post has been moved to Game Information.

You can have up to four playable Sims. You just need to unlock the other two Sim slots. You can also have eight NPCs as well in your household, so acutally you can have a big family of 12 Sims.

Once Sims are retired you can choose to postpone their departure if you want.  A birthday cake icon will appear over their heads. Tap on it and you can choose either to keep them in the household for a while or let them leave. 

The mentoring event should be available as long as the retired Sim is still living in the house.
