How do you sign free agents or practice squad players to long term contracts?

In Madden 18 CFM how do you resign players whom you acquired from free agency or are on your practice squad to multi-year contracts? I know CFM auto resigns practice squads at the end of each year, but If I wanted to sign one of these players to a 3 to 5 year deal how and when would I do so?
