Engineer combat role idea

So I was wondering about this for a while to bring more appeal to the engineer role for the support class. First idea was the ability to modify half tracks by adding more frontline uses for them an example being take off the 2 machine guns on the top of the sdkfz 251 (the German half track) and mounting a mortar or a 37mm pak 36 AT gun. Maybe a light AA gun on the half tracks but now they would be armored?
