I have an account with EA and play SWGOH and the Battlefront Companion app but I can't sign in to SWTOR to play for free because it won't accept my username and email address which is the same ones I use playing the other games. George

Swtor has a separate registration from EA, SWGOH or Battlefront companion app.  It does not use your email to login, it uses a Display Name which is created when you register for swtor and not your email address.

But the game asked me to put in my email address and it said it wasn't a recognized format?

Did you install the game with the CD? Because that would explain why you still have the old launcher with the email address instead of your username. If so, @proxos666 's advice should help. If it doesn't, I would recommend uninstalling the CD version and downloading the game from the website.
