Anthem Horde Mode
With the release of the Cataclysm on PTS, and the play experience with the Freeplay anomalies, it brought back a discussion I had with several friends and players about a dedicated horde mode. With the positive feedback being received on these new Freeplay events I decided to put my ideas on paper and bring this write-up.
How would the Horde mode work?
My idea for a horde mode in Anthem consists of 10 or 20 Tiers/Waves/Stages whatever you want to call them (Currently Tiers in Cataclysm) of constant aggressive enemy’s.
Every Third Tier complete a small pause happens and a chest spawns for players to regroup, restock and get ready for the next tier, having a chest is a must, rewarding the players for their accomplishments.
These tiers would increase in difficulty/concentration of enemy’s as the tiers progressed. On the Tenth Tier a boss encounter spawns resulting in a tough fight and once defeated drops more rewards and possibly a chance at better rewards… (looking at you Legendary drop!!).
How does this fit into the Anthem game?
We already see story content which has the player entering the Fortress of Dawn and using a Gateway device to be ported to an alternate reality/simulation to walk the footsteps of General Tarsis and the Legion of Dawn.
This lore allows the game to provide an area where the players can place their signet and enter a gateway into an arena where they must hold points or fight through tiers of enemy’s. These enemy’s can be themed to a random map, for example you could enter into a Forest area where there are wild animals such as Scorpions, Wolven, Wyverns and even Ursix.
Another could be like the current story mission, the Last Stand of General Tarsis, holding a position on the stairs from Tiers of Dominion soldiers. Another could be a crystal cavern with elemental or an Outlaw stronghold where attack wave upon attack wave of Outlaws come porting in. There could even be an Urgoth themed arena, the possibilities are endless, and this is where creative interpretation from the developers comes in, it’s up to them how these arenas or levels would look. (Level Design) wink wink!
The game already has a cut scene available from The Fortress of Dawn mission, where you are ported through the gateway device.
What would the game mode be called?
Trials of Tarsis or something similar. The game mode could be selected from the expedition menu and from entering the Temple of Tarsis in Freeplay.
With the addition of leader boards, this new game mode would be perfect for leader boards. Squads can gain score via fighting through the tiers, gaining points for getting further and further into the Tiers, the quicker the squad clears through the tiers the better multipliers and the better the score. You could also reward multipliers for survival, time taken etc.
Modifiers / Inversions
Tapping into the new game mechanics coming with Cataclysm, this also leads nicely into modifiers or inversions as they are currently called in Cataclysm, and how these could be used in a horde game mode. Each week or day there could be a different modifier, increased electric damage, increased ultimate damage, increased armour % etc.
Using the current difficulties built into Anthem. All difficulties would be the same as they are currently, but scores would reflect the difficulty chosen. For example, GM2 could have a score multiplier of x2 and GM3 a score Multiplier of x3.
Add in weekly and daily challenges with coin rewards. Also add horde mode specific challenges to the Cortex, these could be things like ‘Defender of the Dawn – Defend 10 Points in Trails of Tarsis'. These would-be one-time coin reward challenges.
With the horde game mode you could add a new currency for completing Trials. You could also add vanity items to the chest rewards themselves or do something similar to the Cataclysm with War chests.
Here’s an example of how the game mode would work –
Select game mode from Expedition screen or enter Fort from Freeplay. (Matchmaking would search or load straight in if in full squad)
Load into Fortress of Dawn.
Place signet at Statue – squad is ported to arena, using cut scene already in game.
Objectives displayed in tracked area
Tiers 1-3 - Chest spawns at end of tier 3, small pause to collect rewards and resupply.
Tiers 4-6 - Chest spawns at end of tier 6, small pause to collect rewards and resupply.
Tiers 6-9 - Chest spawns at end of tier 9, small pause to collect rewards and resupply.
Tier 10 Boss Encounter spawns along with additional enemies.
Round 1 Finished or Expedition Finished if only 10 Tiers.
Round 2 Starts
Tiers 11-13 - Chest spawns at end of tier 13, small pause to collect rewards and resupply.
Tiers 14-16 - Chest spawns at end of tier 16, small pause to collect rewards and resupply.
Tiers 17-19 - Chest spawns at end of tier 19, small pause to collect rewards and resupply.
Tier 20 Boss Encounter
Expedition End, Score added to Leader boards, returned to Expedition End Screen.
A horde mode in Anthem would be a great addition and would be permanent content.
Thanks for reading, please feel free to discuss and let me know if you would like a horde mode in Anthem.
