Hello, i'm having the same problem (security question that was put when account was hacked).

I managed to change the password through my email, and got the account back, but now i can't change the security question and manage my account.

I'm asking for your support and you are telling me that i have to pay (my country Greece is not on your list) in order to call you???

What kind of support is that??

You don't have any other option like live chat or email or call me back for when someone is out of your small list of supported countries??

That's pretty lame wouldn't you agree?

Update:

Previous post on page 28 from Tom (community manager) doesn't make much sense.

I mean, according to that post, EA doesn't do support through the email, because "how do we know it's you?" but they do phone support. and how do you know on the phone it's me?? you'd have to ask me something i guess, but then again, you could ask me the same things on the email!!! speaking on the phone with chatting through email doesn't have much difference in knowing who it is on the other end.

Furthermore, there is a great guy Mozhumss again on page 28 (message 12-27-2016 05:57 AM) that posts this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJse8jUnCUQ (thank you Mozhumss!!)

that really solves the problem without any hassles and without having to get charged for calling EA, and without waiting on the line!!

Officially Tom again says that this is allowed because in order to use this method players would need to have full access to all information linked to the account!!!

What's strange is that with this workaround/method the only thing you need to know is your account password and email!! nothing more! which you already know in the case when you just forgot you security question!!! With only these 2 credentials (email, password) they allow this method, but they don't want to support us through email (same email we have on the account) because they don't know it's us??!!!

That makes NO sense at all!!

I doubt even a psychologist could make heads or tails of their logic!!

And since EA allows this method, then make it at least official somewhere where people can easily find it, and save us all the trouble and hassle!

with regards,

A frustrated user

Hi there,

I understand your frustration, but you seem to have drawn a wrong conclusion from my explanations.

As stated, to use this workaround you would need to know the login details for the account. Why we allow this method? That is because in order to use this method you would also need access to the email address registered on your account.

If someone would have access to your email address (the actual inbox where you receive your personal email) and no login verification was set up on your EA account (which is a requirement for this workaround to work, we always strongly advise enabling login verification), then they would already have free reign over your account anyway. At that point you would also be in a lot more trouble than just having a hacked EA account, as your personal security would be compromised.

So while we allow this workaround, it is still not preferred and it will not work for everyone. Your best solution is still to contact our dedicated customer support channel that exists for the sole purpose of helping players like yourself.

I hope I was able to clarify this for you - do let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Tom,

Having this issue but I have been waiting endlessly on the phone (max 20mins so far)

Live chat shows "5mins" in queue for any amount of time I wait (max so far 35mins)

If you guys are going to recommend a dedicated channel can you at least have people answering it?

@Straatford87

hello again Tom,

I think i have understood what you are saying, but even so i think my point still stands.

So i'll try to explain myself better in this post in order to be as tangible as possible.

Because if my point is valid and stands, then maybe you could somehow help out future users having the same problem (though i don't know what kind of pull your position offers you and whether you can bring about any changes).

So i'll start by stating my problem,

I have access to my email (the email registered in the origin account), and also got back my access to my origin account (username/password) but i didn't have a way to change the security question (other than me calling EA).

You don't support me through email saying that my email might be compromised and it's not safe this way.

There are 3 possibilities here:

1) (hacker has access to origin account, and email)

Say it is!

Say that i'm a hacker posing as the real user, then according to you by don't supporting me through email, all is good and safe.

BUT, you support me through phone, so me the hacker call you to make the changes i want (security question, which i don't remember).

By phone you say you can help me because you can tell if i'm the real user. But the truth is you cannot tell.

Because you don't have any of the real user's credentials (no name, no last name, photo, no nothing) only thing you have is a username and password (for origin) and an email (these are the only mandatory fields to create an origin account.

These 3 things the hacker has them already and so can pose as a real user, and you cannot tell the difference.

So, there is no point here in denying support through email and offer it through phone, by saying it is safer this way.

Am i right in this?

Even if i'm not (please explain why in the above example). There is one more method EA allows, and that is the workaround (fifa) method.

Now here all the hacker has to do is get in the origin account (to which he has the username and password) and send the security code to the email (to which he also has access) and that's it! he has changed the security question.

Again here EA says that it's ok with the workaround method and safe but not with the email method, which we clearly see in the above exaple that is not the case.

Through email is the same "safe" as through the workaround method.

So there is really no point in allowing the one and not the other.

There is no difference in safety among the 3 (or 2) methods. so why not allow the 1 (email) if you allow the other 2?

2) (hacker has access to origin account, but not to email)

Now say the hacker has access to origin account (username/password) but no access to email.

Again we see that through phone you can catch him or not allow him to make changes to security question (since he doesn't know or doesn't have access to the email).

Also the workaround (fifa) method makes it impossible as well for the hacker to make the change to the security question (since he doesn't have access to the email where the security code is sent to). So EA does well here to allow both those methods as safe.

BUT lets see the method EA doesn't allow and regards it "not safe".

Through email.

The hacker asks for the security question to be resent to the email. And so it happens, and is resent to the email. The hacker cannot get it in order to make the changes he wants, because he doesn't have access to the email.

So again, there is no difference in safety among the 3 methods. so why not allow the 1 (email) if you allow the other 2?

3)

The last possibility is that there is no hacker, and there is only the real user.

Then both phone and workaround methods are safe, but so is through email (which EA doesn't acknowledges as safe!). So again there is no reason to differentiate the 2 allowed methods (phone, workaround) from the email method.

In all 3 cases/possibilities, there is no reason to differentiate the email method from the other 2, for safety concerns.

Can you please elaborate on this and let me/us know what i'm missing?

Because if i'm not missing something and this is the case, then there should be an email support for changing security questions and help all those users avoid all the fuss and hassle and costs.

Lastly if i do miss something (please explain what) then why not incorporate a chat support instead of email. Isn't that pretty much the same as the phone support?? That would also help all those frustrated users.

***All of the above are referring to support for the countries that are NOT on EA's list (right now EA covers only 32 countries out of 196,  around 16%).

I'll be looking forward to your reply.

with regards,

PJ27

Re: i forgot my security question on origin and i can't change my name.

I just had this problem: I have a main Origin account and I wanted to use my normal nick but it was being used by a one off throwaway origin account I made years ago which I didn't remember ANYTHING for except the email. After resetting the password I tried changing the nick to anything but was greeted by that useless security question. No idea what I typed into that field 8 years ago so I'm not gonna get it done that way. Found this thread, got more proof about how utterly incompetent EA is as a business and decided that there has to be a way.

THERE IS!

found a youtube vid that looked sketchy af but after checking the link in the desc box I believe it's safe to use (https with EAs own certs)

Basically you make origin send you a one use passcode to your email every time you use your password or attempt to edit your profile, thus skipping the bloody question.

I'm not going to link to the video but it's pretty straight forward to find on youtube, just search for something along the lines of "reset origin security question" or something.

Hi again,

You assume that we can't tell via phone, but we can. Though I can't share any of our methods with you as those are considered confidential. But I am happy to at least share with you that the methods available to us via phone create the key difference as to why we don't use email.

@DarkLordBelmont

It appears that you've managed to get through to us already. Could you explain what made you get through to us in the end? That will make sure that I can get any issues with the website looked at.

@Straatford87

There isn't much to talk about if you can't share information as far as the phone support is concerned. So i guess we leave it at that.

Nontheless, phone support was only half my case. How about the other half (workaround method)?
