Origin Launcher won't launch

★★★ Novice

I can't get Origin Launcher to work Frown

I have previously used Origin on this computer, but haven't opened it in a few months. Now when I try to open it (via the desktop shortcut, the start menu and direct from the folder), I get a few seconds of the blue "thinking" wheel and then NOTHING. I haven't loaded any new programs in that time.

When I open task manager, Origin is listed under the Processes tab, but the Origin icon is not present when I click the arrow on the start-bar to show the currently running programs.

I have tried all the options that I have found online including:

- Restarting / switching computer off (multiple times)

- Running Origin, OriginSetup and all other Origin.exe files in the folder

- Deleting Origin.exe and renaming OriginTMP to Origin (which I can't do because there is no OriginTMP file)

- Uninstalling and reinstalling (including deleting all associated Origin files and all games that use Origin) multiple times

- Clean boot

- Deleting all cache files on my computer

Any other suggestions???

@Aimz1586 Can you go ahead and clear the Origin cache to ensure that when you cleared the cached files on your PC you also got the Origin one.

You can clear the Origin Cache by following the steps below:

  1. Completely log out and close down Origin
  2. Hold down the Windows key and R
  3. Type in "%ProgramData%" (without quotes) and click OK
  4. Now open the Origin folder.
  5. Delete all the files and folders in the Origin folder, except for LocalContent (do not delete this one)
  6. Hold down the Windows key and R
  7. Type in "%AppData%" (without quotes) and click OK
  8. This will take you to a Roaming folder, which is located inside of AppData. Delete the Origin folder
  9. Click on the word "AppData" at the top of your window
  10. Open the Local folder here
  11. Delete the Origin folder listed here
  12. Restart your PC and log back into Origin

Thanks, but this unfortunately didn't work Frown

Now the origin icon appears broken (it's just a picture of a blank page, instead of he orange circle logo) and when I click it, I don't get the blue "thinking wheel". It still opens in the background though, according to the task manager. I also used to get the "open as administrator" box when I tried to open as administrator and after clicking yes, it wouldn't open. Now I don't get the "open as administrator" when I try to open as administrator.

I found this issue as well when trying to install on a new Windows 10 PC. Having always used Windows 7 in the past, I've been having these issues with a few programs. The fix, thankfully, is quite easy. (Note: You will need to have Administrator rights, otherwise the fix gets a lot more complicated)

Make sure you have a clean install before following these steps.

With Admin rights:

1. Right click the launcher on your desktop and select "Open File Location"

2. Now right click the "Origin" launcher file, and click Properties

3. Click the "Compatibility" tab at the top

4. Click "Change settings for all users" (You need Admin rights for this)

5. Click the checkbox next to "Run this Program in Compatibility Mode for"

6. Click the drop down list and select "Windows 7"
7. Click "Ok" and then "Ok" on the next window to apply the new settings

8. Launch Origin normally and it should run.

The program on the download page states its for Windows 7 or later: I don't think they have perfecter the "or later" yet

Alternitively, you can try the latest client which for some reason doesn't get automatically updated. At the moment, I think it's 10.5.30

Here is a link for download:

@Metta_Techan If sharing a download link please do not link to unofficial third-party download sites.

@Aimz1586 Were you able to try the steps that @Metta_Techan posted to see if it helped?

Let me know how you got on.

The Windows 7 compatibility mode trick is the only way I could get it to run under Windows 10. Thank you!
