Lag?

So, I am having trouble with the speed of the game. For the first month it was running smoothly. Now it lags. Pause takes a couple seconds to kick in, the sims just stand there when told to do something, takes a while for them to actually do it.  Now I also run World of Warcraft, which runs just fine with no lag.  So I guess what I am asking is if there is some maintenance going on, or is their a way for me to check out why it is lagging. I am not a computer whiz. Any help would be great. Thank you
