Running in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3) in addition to 16 bit color mode fixed it for me.

I had the same issue with Windows 10....finally after following all of the instructions, it still would not work.

The black screen had gone, but I could not click on the buttons in the game menu.

Windows 10 gave me a recommendation to change High DPI settings. This resolved the issue.

What works for me was 

1. Go to the game folder

2. Right click on "game.exe"

3. Choose "Properties"

4. Check "Disable fullscreen optimization"

5. Apply

You might need to do this with "gamemd.exe" for Yuri or the relevant executable.
