Same problem here, error message translated from Swedish:

"Login failed - An error occured when connecting to the Spore servers. Your computer could be offline or you are having trouble with your Internet connection. Check your connection or visit Spore.com for server status or support."

So yesterday I bought Spore on steam right, but when I'm trying to create a Spore account with my EA information it says "An unknown error occured during registration. Please try again". I've tried over and over again with controlling my spelling, but it still stood the same, "An unknown error occured during registration. Please try again". I thought maybe there was some server issues but it's still the same.. Halp please :3
