Sims friendship status doesn't change

After getting to know a Sim(s) and becoming good friends, you get to ask them about becoming best friends, but after you do and check your relationship status with them, it still says they are just a good friend. The green bar at the top of the screen is filled up and yet it seems as though the new relationship status didn't register.
