I was playing rank mode normally and just as we were about to enter the ring, the game suddenly froze and after about 10 seconds I was sent back to the main screen with a message that I couldn't connect to the server.
When I re-entered the lobby, It was told that I had been removed from the match and received a penalty for being removed.
This is the 4 time in the recent past that I have lost points because of this

I’ve been having the same issue. The server can’t tell whether or not I quit or the game just crashes? I’ve desynced out of multiple games and just got an abandonment penalty for no fault of my own.

@EA_Atic Happened twice today. My ping is okay. I am using Singapore servers. Just gets kicked out once the game starts and then when I reconnects, gives me an abandon penalty. Happened many times before and doesn't seem like Apex is fixing it. I checked the connection guide and everything is good on my end.

Even if there were connection issues, the game must know how to recognise a game crash or server error from deliberate disconnection and not give abandon penalties unnecessarily.
