EDIT: I fixed the issue by using a VPN to match my “location” to my language.

I’m unable to load SWGOH on iPhone after recent update. I’m told a new client is available. Downloaded it from the App Store. Opened and it stays stuck on Initializing Game Systems.

I’m literally having the same issue, and am in Japan also!
I’m in between internet service too and don’t currently have a VPN.

Thanks @Vertigozooropa I had the same problem here in Japan too. Also fixed with a vpn based on your experience. Got me back in the game.

I have the same problem and posted about it here but no advice except "reinstall the game" which I hesitate to do for a number of reasons.
This can be fixed if you change your app language to something besides English (Japanese, French, whatever). But if you want to play in English (and, you know, read the descriptions, feats, etc.) you are currently SOL.

@Vertigozooropa I mean I am glad this worked for you and I appreciate the tip, but CG needs to fix it on their end, I don't have any desire to set up a free VPN, for various reasons.
