Can't control Sims. Needs bar gone.

I can make a sim/family perfectly fine, but when I try to play them I can't control anything. I can watch them do whatever they want, but the needs bar is gone. I can't choose options (in the top right corner) or anything, either. The only thing I can really do is switch between sims, move books, and move the camera. I am so annoyed because I literally just bought the game and I haven't even been able to really play it, yet.
