A final salute to Battlefield o7

I was just listening to the Battlefield 2142 menu theme on YouTube, and noticed a comment I made 13 years ago, expressing my excitement for Battlefield 1943 and how much I enjoyed the first Bad Company's singleplayer.

Well, hello younger me, from 13 years in the future. Guess what, 1943 was awesome, despite being a console only title. Sadly it is shutting down in a few months from the time of writing (December 8th, 2023), and I plan on playing it on PS3, the day it shuts down, until the very second they pull the plug on it.

I played BF1942, BF Vietnam, BF2, and BF2142 from their respective launch days, all to the very end and loved every second. Every battle, every minute spent optimising shaders, every chaotic brawl on the various flags and silos, all worth it.
Wish EA wouldn't be so profit oriented as they are, I wish they could actually appreciate their older players even if we don't buy their microtransactions and battle passes, realise it would be appreciated by so many of us to revive the old master servers, with our official rankings and such.

Evidently though, all good things come to an end. I still enjoy BF2 and BF2142 when they're active, but it's definitely not the same when the games had thousands of players on official servers Standard smile

Good bye to self-hostable servers, good bye to map packs(!), inventive mods bringing us fresh and innovative gameplay experiences, good bye to true teamplay and squad management. It was a pleasure enjoying Battlefield while it was still with us.

Hopefully the "connected experience" they're gunning for works out for them, I hope it works out for me too somehow, and I hate to be pessimistic but it's starting to occur to me I might be too old for the current market trends, monetisation and marketing practices.

o7 to all past squadmates and commanders across the decades. It's been an honour.

Edit: I know it's silly to be so dramatic over something so superficial as my favourite multiplayer FPS series coming to an end, but I choose to remain silly.

It's like if World of Warcraft was announced to shut down or be completely shifted and redesigned into something it isn't to make more money, people would mourn it all the same.

It doesn't feel superficial to me, if it is. That is why I choose to come preaching to the public ear like this.

Nice post. I feel the same way. I'm worried about the next Battlefield too.

I'm gonna drop the series completely or stick to BF4 longer. The community is pretty healthy compared to other titles over so many years in BF4.

No rentable servers with a lack of any chance of forming a community around the server is a no-go for me in recent BF titles.

It had been a fun ride but it's probably time to move on. Clearly, the core community has not understood Specialists Tongue out

It gave me flashbacks of EA calling their customers uneducated during BFV's development.

Or when EA blamed Halo for Battlefield 2042's poor launch.

Yeah, and when EA said the average Battlefield player is too stupid to work with the Frostbite engine 🙄 (RE: People wondering why Battlefield 3 didn't have mod tools.)

Still enjoying Battlefield 2, 2142, and 4 myself... Will at least keep supporting BF4 until it isn't possible any more.

Have you played Battlebit Remastered yet? It's a ton of fun. More Battlefield than Battlefield and it's still in Early Access.

@nixRidge Unfortunately all of us Old School players are dying off and we don't have a voice in this modern world. These run & gun kids don't even know how to use vehicles, and want them taken out of the game, or made so soft that no-one will want to use them. Gone are the good old days and the future looks so bland. Just be thankful that we were present in the good old days when things were better. Peace

Not had the chance yet, not a Steam user. The gameplay looks solid. I think the reason I didn't rush to go play it is because even for me the graphics are a little too simple. I'm a firm believer in gameplay over graphics, and I loved playing Blockland, Ace of Spades, Roblox and Minecraft back in the day, so not sure why. But the game looks great fun otherwise I'll say that Standard smile

EA needs to allow DICE to take notes from it. I'm sure DICE wants to... But having permission from big corp EA is another thing.

Moved to Battlefield General Discussion since it's not specific to Battlefield 2042.
