These specialists seems really weird and unnecessary, preset, predefined characters in non-story multiplayer game? Why?

No one has ever had an issue with just being a random soldier, this isn't Rainbow Six, and we don't need to be some legendary hero character either.

And we can customize the appearance.. how does that even work when you play as a specific person? I'm some dude name Webster but I can customize the way he looks, the weapon he carries and everything except the gadget? What's the point of having this whole character exist?

Also how do we have 'more flexibility than ever before, when it comes to specialists' when it locks stuff behind that specific character.. or name.. or whatever empty shell it represents?

And with only 10 specialists and 128 players are we going to see a clone army with a dozen of each character, or probably 60-70 of a specific character as one will end up being outright the better choice so we have 70 Maria's, that probably force players to play as a female character as well?

If you already add in the ability to customize, which I assume is limited to a camo, why not allow players to just create their own soldier, with their own appearance and whatever, rather than this weird misplaced system?

I thought it was an awesome briefing that clears up a lot of things for me.  In particular, as Planetside 2 player and Battlefield player since the PC only games, how they are managing the objectives and map dynamics sounds awesome.  Some key items for me:

  • The cluster approach to map objectives - this is something Planetside 2 successfully does on their large continents (approximately 5km squared).  It's great to see Battlefield adapt this.  You'll get intense fights within these clusters to control them.  Given how long it can take a team to control a base in Planetside 2, I'm curious to see how this affects the win conditions in a Conquest match.  It seems like a heavy infantry situation, but my guess is the ability to control the area around the cluster with vehicles will be a huge advantage.
  • The large areas between clusters - vehicles become essential as players look to move from cluster to cluster.  Reminds me of Battlefield 2's large maps.  You didn't want to be that guy trying to run from flag to flag lol.  In Planetside 2, vehicle combat between bases is essential for the ability to successfully assault or defend the next base.  Vehicles are no longer just something fun to mess with or farm infantry in (how dare I suggest such a thing! LOL!!), but have a major tactical purpose/role within the overall conflict.  Gear heads rejoice!!
  • Specialists are subclasses of the main 4 classes - it was good to see this definitively stated.  The main 4 classes are still there, but now the abilities are spread across the specialists.  Interesting that the Medic is part of the support class.
  • Customizing Specialist loadouts - this indeed is going to alleviate players just using one class all the time.  You can put your favorite gun on any Specialist.  You can equip your recon or medic specialist with an RPG or other anti vehicle weaponry.  It allows players to be adaptable which will be crucial in maps and conflicts this large.
  • Plus System - a nice explanation of preserving weapon archetypes.  This won't let you turn an SMG into a sniper rifle.  But gives extra flexibility needed in the large conflicts and maps.  Planetside 2 addresses these sort of things with fairly easy access to weapon terminals either in APCs or bases that allow you to swap gear without respawning.  It's the same basic idea...you want to be adaptable in large conflicts that are completely unpredictable with so many variables in play.

Overall so good...I'm ready!!!  EA Play June 22 for more, right?  Did I get that right? Wink

See I'm so pumped for this that I crafted that whole post...detailing all my wonderful points.  And yet, I forgot the most important part of the briefing...the RETURN OF CARTILLERY!!!!  LOL!!!

One of the elements I like in Battlefield has always been that you could tell what side someone was on by simply looking at them (they have relevant uniforms). With the introduction of specialists that have no allegiance to a country, are we going to see a COD like environment with players on both sides using characters that look exactly the same?

@Rusty Rat From what JackFrags said in his Youtube breakdown, each side seemed different colored in a way sort of like what we are used to. I think you'll be able to tell the difference when you aim at them too.

I'd like to admit that the Battlefield franchise has me back as a fan! I stopped playing and buying the new games because of a couple of reasons. The last Battlefield game I bought was Battlefield 1, just to see if I would like a game that was set back in time. Which I really didn't like. I was even fortunate enough to play the alpha version of the game and I appreciate that. I just couldn't get used to the older guns, attachments (lack there of), and the vehicles. I'm used to the newer jets, helicopters, and tanks.

So I went to playing COD games which only reminded me of why I hated the franchise in the first place (campers).

But I'm glad to see that Battlefield is back in the modern day and even in the future. It's cool to see that it's not about shooting a bunch of ray guns or something like a sci fi shooter. It's looks and from the articles sounds like it's a promising game. I can't wait to play the beta and the full version. I will definitely be streaming my gamplay. Maybe there is a way I can get in on the alpha? Maybe a partner or promotional streaming deal of some sort? I'm a new streamer Dice or EA get back to me. It's worth a shot.

@McCay8723Yeah its cool that BF2042 is just a natural progression of ballistic weaponry. BF2142 was the same...it wasn't all the sudden Halo or Star Wars. So I already expected this from BF2042.  The modern day familiar aspects mixed with imaginative future tech makes for an awesome mix.
