After connecting a USB controller, the game does not detect the controller. At the local coop screen, nothing happens for player 2 when I press the buttons on the controller. The Join A prompt remains on the screen for player 2. Player 1 is detected normally via keyboard. The game is installed on Origins. The controllers work fine with other games.

A 360 should work as well.
If you have "Origin in Game" enabled, disable it > test.
Are there other interface devices connected to your machine, besides Keyboard and mouse?
If so, disconnect them > test.
If that don't works, try to connect the controller to the machine after you starter the game.

What controller is this?
A Way Out only supports PlayStation 4 and Xbox One controller.
So if you don't have one of thees, you will probably need a third party wrapper that emulates a Xbox controller.
"XInput Wrapper" for example.

I turned off "Origin in game" and my controller started to work as described below.
