I don't know if it's my graphics processor being not powerful enough or my game files, but I haven't even gotten past training because of most everything being invisible. The very first bit has smoke but is otherwise black. I found the "lights" by watching a video of it to find out where they were. After that, on the next section, the environment was very good looking and visible with a good framerate. Yet again, something was missing: the gun in my hand. Is this a common problem or is my PC just not cutting it?

Similar to dozens of games since the abortion of a GPU series named the Geforce Optimus first appeared about four years ago, it must be forced to work when it refuses. You are seeing only the Intel chip working, while the Optimus remains asleep. Please do not ask me how to fix it. nVIDIA has had YEARS in which to make this switching fully automatic, and has continually failed.
