updates on base games

Why do I HAVE  to update the sims 3 base game it takes 3 hours. Why can I just Install The sims 3 University Life with out the update ?? Why do I have to wait 3 hours for the freaking update when I could be studying for school or being a jock?

Unforunately, that's the way it is. I know it's horrible, we all go through the same. However, the game has to be updated before you can do anything.

because if you don't update, the game won't run properly.
