sims 3 pets not installing

I have the Sims 3 Pets game and every time go to install it, it works for a little bit then a few times it will say Error and to retry and I do. It finally gets to the end and it's stuck there for hours and won't move anymore. Has happened multiple times. I go into my game and it says the expansion is there and I can see the items that the game has but I can't place any of them down or adopt any animals. This is all when it's still at the end but not completely installed. What's wrong with it and how do i fix it so it will install?
