Sims 3 will not play [ Edited ]

I installed Sims 3 on my laptop this morning using Origin. My laptop is running Windows 8.1. The base game (with no pathes/updates) worked perfectly.

I then had to manually install the latest patches/updates from the Sims 3 website because the launcher would not connect to the EA download manager. 

After installing the patch and the expansions Ambitions and Pets, the game will not play!!! It's driving me crazy.  The launcher works, but when I press play nothing happens. I've been googling like crazy but I can't find a solution! Any tips?

EDIT: I unistalled the expansion packs and the base game works fine. Any tips on getting the expansion packs to work?

Many people with your cpu have the same issue: They can play the base game but not any expansions. Try if it works with Ambitions only. Pets is more demanding.

The minimum requirements need at least a 2.4 ghz CPU or equivalent. You only have a AMD 1.0 ghz which is not an equivalent.

I would try to get a refund for your expansion pack through a game advisor

Thanks. Ambitions on its on didn't work either. Unfortunately as I bought the games a long time ago I don't think I'll be able to get a refund.
