Sims 3 keeps crashing

I have the sims 3 game downloaded on my computer as well as the pets and generations packs. I was playing today and I had my family adopt a dog. The game automatically crashed as soon as the dog entered my house. I saved the game right before the dog came, so whenever I go to play with this family I can play for twenty seconds before the dog shows up and crashes. Has anyone else experienced this? Is the pets the problem or is it the game itself?

• How long can you usually play ?
