Sims 3 Pets Freezes and disc not found

I received Sims 3 Pets for Christmas and installed it on my computer. However, as night time falls for my Sims, the game freezes. The game also seems to just run slowly in general and I had this same problem before I installed the expansion pack. But yet another problem has appeared. I tried to start Sims 3 Pets and it claims the disc is not in the disc drive. I doubled checked to be sure and it's in there. I closed out of the game and put the disc in again and it still told me the disc was not found. 

Why might this be happening and how can I fix it?

Also, I play the Sims on a Macbook Pro 11.
