SIMS 3 Expansion pack won't install on MAC

We just purchased the SIM 3 Pets expansion pack.  We get the message saying that the SIMS 3 version installed is more recent than expected.  

The SIMS is up to date with its updates.  The expansion pack said that it successfully installed, but you can't run the program or even see that it is installed on the computer.  How do you fix this?

Are you installing Pets from disc or digital download?
