My sims 3 expansion packs won't work

I bought the sims 3 from origin about a week ago. It came with high end loft stuff and late night I also bought university. The base game will play fine as long as the expansion packs are not installed. Once I install the expansion packs it will not play. I have a PC. It gives me an error message saying that it can not connect to origin. It's is extremely frustrating. I don't understand what is wrong with the games. I have bought many sims games in the past and loved them all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
