Disk Validation in Sims 3

I was given a Sims 3 disk for Mac/PC for Christmas in 2011. I had it and it worked fine. No problems. I then lost the disk and ordered a new one from eBay. The disk arrived today and I tried to install it, I got as far as going onto the 'play' button. Went through all the usual loading processes and then the message came up: We are unable to verify that your disk is a valid copy of The Sims 3. Please contact customer service.

Any explanation?

What's your operating system ?
Do you have any Store Content installed ?
Does the disc have any scratches ?
