Brand new Sims 3 serial number won't work

hello i purchased the sims 3 for PC Brand New at EB games Ingle Farm & my code will not work, The game was still wrapped in the original plastic wrapping so i do not understand why it will not work i have tried every way you can write it in, i've tried redeeming & yet it still will not work is there numbers missing?
