Cannot get Sims 2 to work on Windows 7

★ Novice

I used to play Sims 2 on my old Windows XP machine and it was quite slow and chugging so having dug it out again today i installed it on my current Windows 7 Home 64 bit machine from the 4 coloured cds. I noticed there were compatibility issues so i looked around the internet a bit for help and on the application desktop shortcut on the compatibility tab i've set it to run the program in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2), ticked Disable visual themes and Disable desktop composition and Run this program as an administrator.

The game starts up fine and at a good speed. I can also see some families i created on my old machine (i didn't realise it saved them to disk). But as soon as i load a family or create a new person the app hangs and crashes.

How can i get this to work please? Is there an upgrade patch anywhere that i could run?
