Thanks Ea_Zoe.  I restarted my iPad and managed to reinstall the game (I had't realized the little blue cloud was the same as the 'get' box ).  I got a message about losing data from a different device which I just ignored and now the game is working.  No perfectly as I got the Bart screen when returning to town from Krustyland, but at least it's back.  I think I'll delete some items to make my town smaller and see if that helps.
