I suddenly have no friends! Log in Failed: We could not log you into Facebook.....

I started out playing annonymously and then upgraded my ipad so had to create on origin account to save my progress. I made a right mess of that but got it sorted in the end... however now I have no friends. So, I go to "Add a friend" and then tap "Log in with Facebook"and get the message:
Log in Failed
We could not log you into Facebook.
Please check you have given this app access.
I cannot figure out what it's asking me to do despite having a good old Google around and playing with settings, help please?
