This is a reproducible bug.
If you have twelve or more created fighters, attempting to find online quick match session will crash the game every time. Upon deleting the 12th created character (for a total of 11 remaining) the game will work as usual.
This is kind of frustrating as it caps the total CAFs available to be created.

Please see info on common issues and workarounds here: http://help.ea.com/en/article/common-gameplay-issues-and-workarounds-for-ea-sports-ufc-2/
Additionally, you and your friend should both open the following ports to maximise connectivity, particularly with regard to matchmaking:

Have you deleted and re-added that particular friend?
If so, you and that friend should both go through the relevant connection troubleshooting below:

Every time my friend and I try to play online rivals or a quick match when the invitee is joining the session the session is no longer available pops up. We've attempted to play each other multiple times and it has only worked once. We can both play randoms online no problem. Not sure what the issue is.
