I bought my children an Xbox one and battlefront for Christmas. Nearly all the time they play we get that damn message. I have forwarded ports as recommended and it's made no difference. What is going on? How can EA sell a game that has such a huge issue?

Yep I've forwarded all recommended ports and turned everything off for a few minutes. Hasn't made a single difference. It's not possible for me to plug a lead directly into the router.
Does this his mean I'm just stuck with a faulty game?

Probably, but to learn about this you need to test it with connected Internet cable. Maybe you have friends that have Internet cable and they could give you for testing.
