Do you have to play with both Controller and Keyboard ???

Ok, I just downloaded Need for speed on my PC and I hope you can answer this question fast because I loved this game on ps4 and would like to play this on my PC. I am not able to accelerate all the way when I use my controller, it only accelerates very slowly ,but when I press down "W" on the keyboard it seems to work fine. I tried setting up just my controller on setting but it doesnt seem to work. Please help !
