What antivirus are you using ? initially
Eset - disable protocol filtering
Kaperskey - disable scan encrypted / secure connections
Nortons (firewall) set exception for launcher.exe and swtor.exe to "allow instead of "Auto"

I use AVG. I have recently had some pop-ups for some of my Steam games, but nothing for SWTOR.

I disabled AVG altogether and it now works.

Are using AVG ultimate , I did come across this thread link , there was an issue with the AVG link scanner surf-shield needing to be disabled lasy year.
offhand I would add launcher.exe brwc_swtor.exe and swtor.exe (swtor.exe is a few more folders in the retailclient folder).

The message has come back now.. I had uninstalled AVG and turned back to Avast. I am not sure what could be causing this problem now.

If you can ping launchpad.swtor.com then the issue is local somehow
I have on occasion even seen a router/modem reboot fixing this sort of issue, generally there will be an active firewall on the modem/router in this instance.

By "ping", do you mean visit on a browser? If so, I cannot. It just keeps loading.

Press the windows key and type cmd , right mouse click on command prompt and select "run as administrator"
type in the black command prompt
ping launchpad.swtor.com
press the enter key , see if it responds ok when the login fails

I can successfully ping that via the cmd line, so I guess it must be something somewhere on the machine that is stopping me...
