When I mouse over a quest name or map icon which indicates an area on the map/mini-map, the client freezes for a second then crashes to the desktop. This is a recent/new installation on a new Surface Pro 4 (i5) running the latest Windows 10. Everything else seems to work fine. 

This is occurring regardless of game resolution or graphics quality (I have tried 800 x 600 at very low quality). I have removed the Bitraider directory and allowed the launcher to re-verify. I cannot currently get the game to open when set to fullscreen (windowed) so I have only been able to test this in fullscreen and windowed. It occurs in both of those modes. 

What else can I try to fix this?

After you relaunched the game did the bit raider folder come back or is it still gone?

Thanks for the reply! - it came back. I have found the discussions about Bitraider confusing, but got the impression that deleting it was a way of forcing a check of the downloaded components of the game, so thought it was worth a try!

Here is what you can do to remove bit raider permanently.  Right now your on the streaming version of the launcher which uses bit raider.  To switch to the non-streaming launcher which does not use bit raider follow the steps below:

NOTE this is a complete download of the game again

right mouse click on game shortcut and select open file location

open the launcher.settings file in notepad and locate the below line and edit to the below

, \"PatchingMode\": \"{ \\\"swtor\\\": \\\"SSN\\\" }\"
, \"bitraider_disable\": true

SAVE the changes.

Delete the BitRaider, Movie and Asset folders then start the launcher.

Thanks. Is that likely to correct a bug within the game client itself? I have it installed on an older computer which had also switched to the streaming installer, and which works fine. It seems like a strangely specify bug (though I've seen a report from someone using Wine to run it on Linux with the same problem!)

Edit to say: I'm trying this now, downloading the game without the bit raider installer.

A reinstall of the game using the other (non BitRaider) launcher hasn't helped. It still crashes, reliably, when mousing over a quest which would link to/display an area of the map.

I ran a repair scan, and have also tried running it at the native resolution - it may be, from events in Reliability Monitor, that the crash is crashing the Windows Settings program, somehow. None of that helped.

Let me know after patch 4.0.2 if the issue is still occurring.  I know this patch is doing a lot of bug fixes.  If it's still not working, please attach a copy of your dxlog after a crash occurs so we can see what is going on.

4.0.2 patched very quickly using the non-streaming launcher this morning but hasn't fixed the problem.

I've attached the DxDiag information. I can't interpret it, really. I also get the second attachment in Reliability Monitor sometimes but I'm not sure if it's related.

Certainly odd issue

have seen a bit of issues with intel drivers , have you tried setting textures etc to medium , running on high has known to be problematic with intel cards (just in case relevant)

I've run it on 800x600, matched the Windows display resolution to the resolution I run the client in, tried it windowed and fullscreen (fullscreen (windowed) doesn't display well, it seems), and am currently trying it on very low graphics settings. 

The display drivers confuse me - the driver listed on that site is version 15.40.10.4300 (10/26/2015) but in Device Manager my display adapter lists version 20.19.15.4308 (10/27/2015) so it looks as if the 'latest' driver on the Intel site is older than the one I have installed. Is it still worth trying to install that driver? (Is it easy to ensure I can roll back to the currently installed one?)

Just updating this thread to point to the known issues sticky here for this issue to enable checking on further updates.

Best workaround is to try using the driver rollback feature in windows initially for the Intel Video Driver 

if that doesn't solve it , install a Intel video driver prior to Sep 15 , and install this direct x redist detailed in the known issues sticky.
