Plants vs. Zombies glitching problems

I recently bought Plants vs zombies garden warfare 1 on Xbox 1 to play with my other half,
after the initial installation we headed for the split screen mode,
On the 1st map we both spawned underneath the map in the sea, and eventually re spawned on land, however all the zombies spawned in the sea and just died one at a time.
We tried a second map and could only access about half the map and the odd zombie would spawn within shooting range but didn't bother coming to us, he just stood there until he died, (not from our bullets) then the third map was a town or something? And we spawned under the roads and just fell until we were out of bounds and respawned close to the roads but underneath again and the same thing happened.
While the game was installing during the free play mode it was fine but once we tried an actual game the glitching was obviously to bad to play.
Has anybody got any ideas what's gone wrong? Could it be the disc or the installation?
I've only had my Xbox about a month so don't know anything really to do with the technical side,
