Keyboard and mouse not working in PVZ GW1

my controls do not work in game, they are fine on the menu but when I get into ANY game (garden ops, etc) they do not work. I've consulted the in game manual but the controls tab is missing (at the start, it just goes to the garden ops page and its the 1st page). Steps I have taken are uninstalling PVZ GW1 and installing it again, checking drivers and requirements and I do not know what else to do. I want to play it badly because of the nostalgia. Please say If I have to go to a controller for it to work (awkward but might solve it)
