US expanison on a UK base game

This is a question I've been waiting to ask for a very long time. 

If I have a UK version of the base game for Sims 2 and I buy a US version of an expansion will it still connect or will i have to get a US version of the base game?

I would like to know before i get another expansion pack so i dont waste my money.
