What does the red X mark on the upper right hand side of the mark mean ?

I saw some threads about it saying that the players is retired in game but yet I can still play it and sell it ...

It mean the players career has ended, Ive been selling them and getting a newer dated card, it burns pucks though unless you can sell high and buy low, Ive also noticed if your in hut, just leave and go back in and it will disappear for awile but the player dosen't seem to play as hard as they should.
