Game will not perform software update for online play. HELP PLEASE!

I am attempting to update the software for online play when I start the game and it prompts me to update. When i go to update, it just shuts the game down and brings me back to home PS3 home menu, and the update never happens, and I've attempted the software update a dozen times.

The game won't allow online play because I haven't completed the update.

I have a cable connection, so it isn't the internet. Can someone please tell me how to make this software update happen? I'm extremely frustrated.

Power cycle your console and router and then check your PS3 connection as detailed here:

How do I power cycle?

Sorry, that just means turn it off and on again. Fully power off the console by holding the power button until it beeps and turns off, then restart the console.
