Did you tried to repair the game? (in Origin > Game Library > right click ME3 > Repair)
Did you run the game on this PC or this network before?
Restart your router.
If that not helps, shut down your Windows firewall and disable the real-time scanner of your antivirus software. (just for testing purpose, don't forget to activate the firewall and the antivirus software later on.)
Should it work after you disabled the firewall, here is a description how to allow a program to communicate through the firewall
If that not helps here is a EA connection troubleshooting guide.

Tried all that was suggested. Am running win 8.1 and use Norton I S (Yes I did disable the fire wall and AV as suggested). Also ran the connection software suggested and it was OK. WHAT next???? Works fine with Mass Effect 2, but not with the Mass effect 3 demo

The Demo servers are down.
To be able to play the demo you need to set Origin to offline mode or if that don't helps, you must disable your network adapters manually, then the Demo will run.
