mass effect 1 will not open the game

i was recently gifted the game and it was downloaded through steam. i was able to install the game ok but when i try to open and play the game, it keeps on saying that the game has immediately stopped working. it's currently being run on windows 7 and it meets the recommended requirements to run the game. any ideas or help please?

@Fenrirs-Knight Can you try checking for any driver updates that you might need?

Also try running the game in Windows XP compatibility mode as a test?

I think the location of the exe is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Mass Effect\Binaries

Right-click the MassEffect.exe then choose Properties, then check the Compatibility tab and try XP.
